Around 1830, Konrad II of the Salian family (King of the Holy Roman Empire 1024, Emperor of 1027 - 1039) laid the foundation stone of today's St. Mary and St. Stephen's Cathedral, the so-called Imperial Cathedral, which was inaugurated in 1061. The Imperial Cathedral, the world's largest surviving Romanesque church, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
The St. Emmeran consecrated chapel, whose construction was begun in 1050, is now used as a baptistery.
