The Noordersluis lock is the largest gateway to the Amsterdam port region. Built nearly a century ago, the lock is currently due for replacement. Construction of the new large-scale sea lock is scheduled to start in 2016 and will be completed in 2019. The Amsterdam port region accounts for more than EUR 6 billion of the Dutch economy on an annual basis - Port of Amsterdam provides employment to more than 66,000 people, either directly or indirectly - More than 80 percent of all cargo is transferred to the Noordersluis lock - In order to accommodate the growing size of cruise, bulk and container ships, the new sea lock will be larger than the current Noordersluis lock. - In fact, the new sea lock may well become the widest and largest sea lock in the world again.
