The guards patrolling in the courtyard of the Tower of London are attracting a lot of tourists, but from a historic perspective, their role wasn’t nearly as glorious. As the Tower was a prison, the guards were frequently bribed by inmates to help them escape. In 1671, they were overpowered by Thomas Blood who stole the Crown Jewels. Though he was quickly captured, King Charles II was so impressed with him that he spared his life and even granted him a vast estate. #IWasHere
