Keeping our freshwater lakes healthy and alive is one of the major ecological challenges of our time.

Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe had suffered both from agricultural industrialisation and commercial fishing to the extent of a massive decrease of native species and
a water quality, unhealthy even for human beings but surely deadly for the fish.

However, due to major investments since the 1980's and a new environmental policy, the lake is once again a sustainable tourism hotspot in the region with a controlled and healthy habitat.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Lakes have a relatively short lifespan in geological measures, meaning they are quite sensitive to climate shifts or human intervention. Even without any negative effect, lakes can expand or disappear within centuries due to slight changes of water circulation. In extreme cases we can witness a lake virtually disappear within a human lifetime - as it happened with the sad plight of the Aral Lake.

Lake Balaton is Central-Eastern Europe’s biggest and most popular lake thanks to its mild microclimate and beautiful surroundings. More and more families move to the area to live there permanently. The lake is in fairly good shape nowadays, fishing is a common activity not only for locals but also for foreign visitors. It is crucial to maintain the healthy state of the lake for as long as possible, as the lake itself is very shallow and is predicted to have a short natural life on a geological scale.

Lake Balaton is protected bythe ‘Global Nature Fund’ within its ‘Living Lakes Network’ program. This organization works on maintaining and restoring more than a hundred freshwater lakes and wetlands worldwide.

I think such a clean lake is the pure land left by nature. We should give something back when we ask for it, and the best reward is to protect the original environment there.

It's like in a novel, a person in a quiet corner, looking at a boat in the water, thinking about the person in his heart.

This kind of environment is really what I have always wanted. A quiet and beautiful place makes me think alone.
