Kitakyushu is the northernmost city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. Kokura Castle is surrounded by Katsuyama Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms. Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a shopping mall by the Murasaki River. Northeast, Moji Port Retro Area has 1900s buildings, like the red-brick Moji Customs Building and striped Old Mitsui OSK Line Building. Vintage locomotives are displayed at the Kyushu Railway History Museum.
Kanmon Bridge and the underwater Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel cross the Kanmon Strait to connect Moji Port to Honshu Island. To the west, the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History has prehistoric fossils and dinosaur models. The Municipal Museum of Art's collection includes ukiyo-e woodblock prints, plus Japanese and European paintings and a sculpture garden. To the southwest, a cable car runs up Mount Sarakura. Kawachi Fuji-en is a garden known for its tunnels made of wisteria flowers, and for its fall colors. On the northwest coast, sea turtles lay eggs on Waita Beach, and Iwaya Beach is popular for windsurfing.
