The Gendarmenmarkt is the most beautiful square in Berlin and the site of an architectural ensemble including the concert hall, the French church and the German church. In the centre of the square stands a statue of Germany's poet Friedrich Schiller. The square was created at the end of the seventeenth century and reconstructed in 1773.

During World War II, most of the buildings were badly damaged, today they have been restored.
