The current territory of the canton of Greece was occupied by Indigenous culture of the Intermediate Area during the pre-Columbian era. In Greece, some archaeological remains have been found such as stone foundations for houses, remains of adobe floors and bahareque walls, denoting the existence of main villages. At the time of the Spanish conquest, the territory of the canton belonged to the Huetar Kingdom of the West, ruled by King Garabito. During the colony, there were no permanent settlements in Greece. The colonization of the territory would not begin until 1825, after the independence of Costa Rica, when the government issued an executive decree that rewarded the inhabitants to discover roads or make tracks that communicated with the unexplored lands of the national territory.
