The miracle of roses is attached to Wartburg and it goes like this: One day the young Elizabeth descended from Wartburg Castle down to the village of Eisenach. She was carrying food under her mantle. Supposedly she had taken items from the family dining table to distribute to the poor in the village, against the wishes of her family, who frowned upon such behavior. Halfway down, she unexpectedly met her husband Ludwig IV of Thuringia, who asked, upon seeing her bulk, what she was carrying. Embarrassed and speechless as she was, she did not know what to say. Ludwig opened her mantle, and to his surprise he found her carrying a bouquet of roses.
