There are many legends revolving around the enormous granite dome located in the Texas Hill Country. For native tribes it was a holy portal to other worlds, and there are haunted tales about people who came to death. For settlers it was the lost El Dorado mine, and for Texas, the name of Texas Ranger Capt. John Coffee Hays is associated to the story of this place. As he was cut off from his company by Comanches, he took refuge on Enchanted Rock and singlehandedly held off the Indians in a three-hour battle that ended when the frustrated Indians fled, who were convinced even more firmly than before that Enchanted Rock was possessed by malevolent spirits.
