Could Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ be our future forecast?
Steve Spielberg’s newest virtual-reality fantasy “Ready Player One” hit theaters last month and stirred up a whole round of discussion on VR technology. The film is based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 bestselling of the same title novel, which features characters escaping harsh reality by plugging on virtual reality headsets and entering into an immersive virtual universe, OASIS.
Setting in the year of 2045 in Columbus, Ohio, people escapes to OASIS to go every places they want to go, do anything they want to do, and be anyone they want to be, where the only limits are their own imagination. Seeing the current newest virtual reality technology development, the world with this fantasy might not be too far future ahead of us. Here are few things that the film might be forecasting what we will be using in near future!
#1: VR touch-sensitive bodysuit
The movie’s hero, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), wore a VR touch-sensitive bodysuit with VR headsets when entering OASIS. What this bodysuit does is to provide real life virtual touching sensation. In other words, when other people touches you while you are in OASIS, you will be able to feel it through this touch-sensitive bodysuit in real life. Not only the pressure of touch, even the temperature and texture sensation might be able to transmit as if someone is actually touching you.
#2: Control of VR through imagination
As it is mentioned above, the only limit in the world of OASIS is our imagination. The content and stories inside the OASIS are all created by each and every individual’s imagination in the film. Current VR technology that we have now in the year of 2018 can only provide us the content that is been inputted from outside. We still cannot create our own stories and control the content of VR with our minds, but it might not be same in next several years.
#3: Verbal communication through VR with others
In the film, characters are able to have verbal communication with each other in OASIS as if they are living in the real world. You can hear the voice of others and send yours in real time bases as you speak. If this VR communication system really happened to be able to come true, it will change the entire concept of online communication and how people communicate with each other.
It is very possible that VR and AR technologies used in the film are projecting our up coming future. Who knows! What do you think about “Ready Player One” and what are your predictions for VR & AR for up coming futures? Do you think this will be our future world? Let us know in the comment section below!
