Five-step Mandelbulb Fractal Tutorial

Fractal art has been a popular form of VR videos that is both colorful and dynamic. Complicated as the transformation of the colors and shapes might appear, fractal videos are actually not that difficult to create. Here is a five-step fractal tutorial with Mandelbulb from VeeR that you can try out on your own computer!

First thing we need to clarify is what fractal is. Fractal is a curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. Fractals are useful in modeling structures (such as eroded coastlines or snowflakes) in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth, fluid turbulence, and galaxy formation.

The top four most famous fractal art tools in the world are ranked as such: Apophysis (APO), Ultra Fractal (UF), Incendia, Mandelbulb 3D (MB3D).Today we will take Mandelbulb 3D for an illustration of how to create fractal videos.

Let’s first take a look at the interface.

Step 1: Choose a classic set of formulas

Choose a random option out of the five in the green box

The following items need to have their parameters set, but you can leave them at that for now

Click on “calculate 3D”

Step 2: Slightly alter the parameters to your formulae (as shown in the red box), to generate the shapes you want

Click on “calculate 3D” again

See the changes brought about?

Step 3: adjust color and texture

Step 4: set up multiple FOVs.

So what’s FOV?Field of view is the area of the inspection captured on the camera’s imager.

Here’s the FOV parameters

Use Animation to change the animated effects; Navigator can be used for FOV setup.

This is a regular FOV window, press F to mark down a FOV.

Step 5: produce your Fractal Animation sequence diagram

Boxes in color can all be used to edit parameters for Animation

At last, render a preview before you issue for an output. By taking the image quality down a notch you can get your preview quicker.

Rendering is included in the software, and all you need to do is wait…and wait…and wait even more, for your work to be rendered.

After rendering is done, you can use PR/AE/Finalcut to transform the sequence diagram to a video, and it’s done!Try your hand in fractal creation following our tutorial, maybe you will grow into a pro at this in no time!
